Top traditional Christmas movies

During the holiday season, there is nothing better than sitting with those you love, hot coco in hand, and a Christmas movie on the TV. There are so many Christmas movies to choose from but before you dive into the deep-end of choices, take a look at these classic Christmas movies:

  1. "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946) - This movie, originally filmed in black and white, follows the story of a struggling man, George Bailey, who learns the meaning of his life when he’s shown by an angel what it would be like if he had never existed. Upon its first release, it was not a smashing success but it has become more popular and beloved in the last twenty to thirty years. The film featured the actor Jimmy Stewart and was directed by Frank Capra.

  2. "A Christmas Carol" (1951) - Based on the Charles Dickens’ novel, A Christmas Carol, this film follows a bitter, old man, Ebenezer Scrooge. Through a series of lessons given by three different ghosts, Ebenezer realizes his mistakes and learns to appreciate life more. Scrooge is played by the actor Alastair Sim and the movie is directed by Brian Desmond Hurst.

  3. "White Christmas" (1954) - This film follows the story of a song-and-dance team who save a Vermont Inn in need of help by performing a Christmas show. From this movie, the famous song written by Irving Berlin, White Christmas, was introduced and became one of the best-selling singles in history. The film features Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen, and was directed by Michael Curtiz.

  4. "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (1965) - Based on the comic strip Peanutes, this animated TV special tells the story of Charlie Brown who wants to discover the meaning of Christmas. The show was written by Charles M. Schulz, the author of Peanuts, and directed by Bill Melendez. To this day, A Charlie Brown Christmas is enjoyed all over the world during the holiday season.

  5. "Miracle on 34th Street" (1994) - This Christmas movie, which is a re-make of the film produced in 1947, follows the story of a young girl who tries to prove that a man who says he is Santa Claus, really is. The film stars Dylan McDermott, Elizabeth Perkins, and Richard Attenborough and was directed by Les Mayfield.
